ISSF Ningbo World Cup Recap

The ISSF Pistol / Rifle World Cup was held in Ningbo, China, between the 7th and 15th of September, marking the final pistol/ rifle world cup for the 2025 season.

The 2025 Ningbo World Cup brought together more than 330 athletes from over 40 different countries. Australia was represented at this world cup by a team of 5 athletes, including, Charlottle Bland, Olivia Cartwright and Jack Rossiter in rifle and Alison Heinrich and Ellie Rudder in pistol.

In the Men’s 10m Air Rifle Event, Jack Rossiter qualified 3rd overall, shooting a strong score of 633.4 to progress to the event final, eventually finishing 8th overall with a finals score of 122.9.

Rossiter’s finals appearance in Ningbo adds to what has already been one of the strongest seasons for the world ranked number 6, with three World Cup finals appearances, and a bronze medal at the ISSF Grand Prix in Ruse. Reflecting on his 10m Air performance, Rossiter said, “I’m very happy with my performance in the qualification. I tried to carry the momentum through to the final. I felt great in my preparation prior to the final but unfortunately, I couldn’t follow through.”

Reflecting on 2025 to date, Rossiter said, “I’m happy that I’ve managed to get myself into multiple finals so far this year. Making the final more regularly is a big step in my progression that I’m proud of. I feel like my skills have been improving and I’m hoping I can carry this feeling into the qualification stage in Cairo [World Championships] later this year.”

Australia was also represented in Ningbo by two officials. In her first overseas appointment, Helen Johnson filled the position of Pistol Jury, and experienced international official Alex Maranik took the role of Chairperson – Equipment Control. Officials play integral roles in ensuring fair competition and adherence to ISSF rules throughout competition. To read the full story and see the Australian team’s full results visit the link below:

Moscow Olympians Recognised in a ‘Welcome Home’ to Mark 45-Years Since the 1980 Games

On Wednesday 30th July, Federal Parliament in Canberra recognised the 1980 Australian Olympic Team, 45 years since the controversial Games. This Olympic Team defied intense public pressure to take part in the Moscow Games. The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader were part of the contingent to celebrate the 1980 Olympic Team as well as acknowledge those athletes who were denied the opportunity to compete.

Around 50 Moscow Olympians, including Rifle athlete Yvonne Hill who now at the age of 87, was the oldest athlete to travel to Canberra to partake in the recognition.  Yvonne was one of the only two Australian Shooting Athletes to compete in Moscow. Hill placed 11th overall in the 50m Rifle Prone Event (Open), and teammate, David Hollister (Deceased.) placed 15th.

Australian Olympic Committee President, Ian Chesterman said: “The parliamentary recognition will acknowledge the courage and resilience of the Olympians who faced intense public pressure not to compete, and the enduring hurt and pain many of them still feel to this day.”

Australian remains as one of only two countries to compete in every iteration of the Olympic Games.

Shooting Australia Hosts its Inaugural Trans-Tasman Para Shooting Camp

This month, Shooting Australia, hosted its inaugural Trans-Tasman camp at the Brisbane International Shooting Centre. The camp brought together 15 para-athletes from Australia and New Zealand, with the goal of enhancing practical skills and fostering connections amongst international talent and national programs.

The camp was attended by 3 New Zealand and 12 Australian athletes, along with support staff and national coaches from the two largest national shooting sport programs in Oceania. The Australian attendees included current high-performance program athletes and national squad members, as well as talent transfer athletes, who have recently been introduced to target shooting sports and who have high-performance experience in other sports.

The camp also aligned with the BISC Open pistol and rifle competition, offering athletes access to a quality domestic competition. Additionally, this competition showcased the integration of the target shooting sports, demonstrating Shooting Australia’s continued efforts to increase the accessibility of domestic events for para-athletes, enabling men, women, able and para-athletes to compete alongside each other.

The Trans-Tasman camp was the first of an intended series of Paralympics Australia and Paralympics New Zealand endorsed events, which intend to increase the number and development of para shooting athletes in the Oceania region, ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games. Trans-Tasman camps will occur twice annually, alternating between Australia and New Zealand.

Golden Duo: Scanlan and Iles Win Trap Mixed Team Gold in Lonato https://shootingaustralia.org/golden-duo-scanlan-and-iles-win-trap-mixed-team-gold-in-lonato/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 01:52:55 +0000 https://shootingaustralia.org/?p=5380

Overnight, Australia’s Laetisha Scanlan and Mitch Iles secured gold in the Trap Mixed Team event at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato Del Garda, Italy.

In their first international appearance as a mixed team pairing, Scanlan and Iles finished qualification tied with three other teams on 143 out of 150 targets, forcing a shoot-off to decide who would advance to the gold medal match. The Australians faced two Spanish pairs and Great Britain’s Matthew Coward‑Holley & Ellie Seward before going head-to-head against the Tokyo 2020 Mixed Team Olympic Champions, Alberto Fernández and Fátima Gálvez in the gold medal match. Scanlan and Iles shot a combined score 45 out of 50 targets, over Spain’s 41 to clinch the gold, while Great Britain took the bronze over Spain’s Andres Garcia and Mar Molne Magrina.

After an epic end to qualification, with four teams tied on 143 and having to shoot off to secure their place in the gold medal match, Iles reflected that “It felt very good, that was our ultimate aim and we achieved it.”

The win capped off a remarkable Lonato campaign for Scanlan, who had secured the Women’s Trap individual gold just 24 hours earlier.

“This really has been a dream event for me,” Scanlan said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better performance in the individual and teams. I’m really happy Mitch and I walked away with gold this afternoon against the reigning Olympic champions.”

This medal continues a successful year for Iles, who has now earned three World Cup podiums in the mixed team event, following earlier successes of a gold and silver medal with teammate Penny Smith.

“Going into today’s final, my past results reinforced that I’m confident in my process and just to be confident in myself,” he said.

The 2025 Lonato World Cup featured over 500 athletes from 73 countries competing across Trap and Skeet disciplines, including 183 entries in Men’s Trap and 102 in Women’s Trap, highlighting the event’s world-class standard.

“Giovanni Pellielo winning gold in the individual [Men’s Trap] shows that you can still be more than competitive at the ripe old age of 55 against the best shooters in the world,” the team reflected. “It’s also impressive for a country like Australia, who do not have full-time professional shooters, to be competitive against the world. This is a testament to our grit and competitive nature.”

Other results from the Trap Mixed Team event:
Australia’s second mixed team pairing of James Willett and Penny Smith finished qualification with a combined score of 138, placing them middle of the pack in a field of 54 teams.

With two World Cup gold medals secured over successive days, the Australian Shotgun Team concludes its Lonato campaign with strong momentum as it looks ahead to the remainder of the 2025 season.

Jack Rossiter Places 6th in the Grand Prix of Liberation 2025 https://shootingaustralia.org/jack-rossiter-places-6th-in-the-grand-prix-of-liberation-2025/ Wed, 14 May 2025 01:59:08 +0000 https://shootingaustralia.org/?p=5109

Over the weekend, Australian Rifle Athlete and three-time Olympian, Jack Rossiter, finished 6th in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event at the Grand Prix of Liberation in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Competing in a field of 104 athletes from more than 20 countries, Rossiter finished qualification in 7th place after shooting a score of 630.6.

Commenting on his qualification performance, Rossiter explained, “I am satisfied with the result of 630.6. I think that making the final in a big international competition is important to recognise as a success.”

“I believe that I made a few mistakes during qualification. It wasn’t my best performance and now I know that there are a few technical aspects that I need to work on over the next few weeks.”

Rossiter finished 6th in the final with Slovakia’s Patrik Jány taking home the gold medal. Italy’s Danilo Sollazzo and India’s Paarth Makhija claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Commenting on his experience in the finals, Rossiter highlighted. “The finals started well. I had a strong first series, but I had some problems in my technique that came up in both qualification and the final. I think I know the solution now so I’m glad I will have that to work on.”

“The scores from this competition were the highest out of any international competition so far this year. That is the main reason why I’m satisfied with making the final, even though I know that there are improvements to be made.”

Reflecting on how this competition will help him in future competitions, Rossiter explained, “I believe this competition was great in terms of setting me up for the Munich World Cup. My goal is to improve upon my performance in Pilsen and I now know what I can change over the next month to improve technically.  Now I have to work to implement that in training and then in competition.”

Rossiter will be Australia’s sole representative at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany next month.

Shooting Australia – Shotgun Performance Program https://shootingaustralia.org/shooting-australia-shotgun-performance-program/ Wed, 07 May 2025 05:47:43 +0000 https://shootingaustralia.org/?p=5100 Last month Shooting Australia launched its LA 2028+ High Performance Strategic Plan, which is a document that provides not only a road map to our success at the LA 2028 Games, but the foundations for our sustained success in Brisbane 2032.

SHOOTING AUSTRALIA LA 2028+ HIGH PERFORMANCE STRATEGY

As part of the implementation of its LA 2028+ Strategy, Shooting Australia will make a number of changes to its High Performance (HP) Program to better align resources and support with the development and performance requirements of current and future cycle athletes, coaches and teams.

From 2025, Shooting Australia will transition from four to two National Programs that will include a:

  • Shotgun National Program that will identify and support Australia’s best senior and junior Shotgun athletes; and
  • Precision National Program that will support Para and Able athletes across both Pistol and Rifle through a more integrated approach.

In 2025, Shooting Australia will invest more than $1M of the funding it receives from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in its Shotgun National Program. This program will support 24 National Squad athletes including both senior and junior across Trap and Skeet. 13 of these athletes have been categorised with the AIS.

SA CEO, Adam Sachs, said: “Australia has a proud history of Olympic medal success in Shotgun, including Penny Smith’s bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Games. The AIS and Shooting Australia are backing our Shotgun National Team to continue this tradition in LA 2028, and have prioritised the people, resources and opportunities that will be required to maximise the probability of our Games success.”

Shooting Australia’s investment in Australia’s best Shotgun athletes will be enhanced through the continuing engagement of world class sports science and performance support provided by the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS). Shooting Australia and the VIS have signed a new four-year partnership agreement that will underpin the delivery of a Melbourne-based National Centre of Excellence (NCE) for Shotgun.

VIS CEO, Nicole Livingstone said: “We value the partnership we have with SA and are proud of the positive impact that the VIS’ people and expertise have had on the performances of Australia’s best Shotgun athletes, including at the Paris 2024 Olympics. We are excited about supporting these athletes and SA to achieve their medal ambitions through co-investment in a Shotgun NCE in the lead up to the LA 2028 Games.”

Shotgun’s National Program and NCE will be led by Program Manager, Adam Hosking, and Performance Coach, Renae Birgan. “The NCE will be a cornerstone of SA’s Shotgun National Program and will provide an elite performance environment that will prepare athletes for national and international competition and success. We will ensure that athletes are engaged with robust performance planning and the provision of high-quality coaching and performance support. These are critical ingredients for their continuing growth and will help our athletes unlock their full potential” said Adam Hosking.

SHOOTING AUSTRALIA LAUNCHES ITS LA 2028+ HIGH PERFORMANCE STRATEGIC PLAN

This month Shooting Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Adam Sachs, announced the High Performance Strategy for the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.

Shooting Australia’s LA 2028+ High-Performance Strategy has been developed with significant input from key stakeholders from both within and outside Shooting, including the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). The plan builds on the learnings from the Paris cycle and sets evidence-based performance targets that Shooting Australia will work towards achieving over the next four years.

The AIS’ confidence in Shooting Australia’s LA 2028+ Strategy is reflected in its decision to not only continue, but to increase the Federal Government’s investment in Shooting between now and the LA 2028 Games, which will create better opportunities and support for athletes to grow their performances and realise their Olympic/Paralympic dreams.

The team, which consisted of one rifle athlete and 7 shotgun athletes, achieved outstanding results across both World Cup events, including two gold medals, one silver medal and seven finals appearances. This success marks an impressive start to Australia’s 2025 World Cup campaign.

SHOOTING AUSTRALIA APPOINTS SHOTGUN PROGRAM MANAGER

This month, Shooting Australia announced the appointment of Adam Hosking as the Shotgun Program Manager.

Hosking was appointed from a strong field of candidates through a robust selection process undertaken by a panel of senior management personnel from SA and the Australian and Victorian Institutes of Sport (AIS and VIS respectively).

Hosking has extensive experience working in high performance sporting environments as both a coach and administrator. He started and has developed his professional career in Swimming and has worked with athletes and programs in Australia and overseas. Most recently, Adam was the Manager of the VIS Archery Program.

Hosking will be based in Melbourne at the VIS and will work closely with Shotgun Performance Coach, Renae Birgan, to drive the development and success of Australia’s best Shotgun athletes and SA’s National Teams between now and the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

ISSF ANNOUNCES SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAM AND VENUES FOR THE LA 2028 OLYMPIC GAMES

In April, the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) confirmed the events that will be included in the shooting sports program for the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

The program will consist of 15 events, including:

  • 10m air rifle for men and women;
  • 50m rifle 3 position for men and women;
  • 10m air pistol for men and women;
  • 25m rapid fire pistol for men;
  • 25m pistol for women;
  • Trap for men and women;
  • Skeet for men and women;
  • 10m air rifle mixed team;
  • 10m air pistol mixed team; and
  • Trap mixed team

Whilst the ISSF has confirmed that all qualification formats will remain unchanged from the Paris 2024 program, it was announced that the finals formats for some events will change. These changes include:

  • An increase in the number of finalists in shotgun (trap and skeet) and 25m rapid fire from six to eight;
  • The final for the 50m rifle 3 position event will feature the standing position only; and
  • The omission of gold and bronze medal matches in mixed team events. In LA 2028, all four teams who progress from qualification to the finals will compete together in an elimination format.

The ISSF also confirmed that shooting will retain the same number of quota places (i.e. 340) at the LA 2028 Olympics as there were in the Paris 2024 Games. However, the process of allocating these quotas is currently being developed by the ISSF for endorsement by the IOC in the coming months.

In addition to the announcement of the shooting sports program for the 2028 Olympic Games, the ISSF has also confirmed the selected venues for shooting sports in LA.

The announcement confirms that shotgun events will be held at the world-famous LA Clays Shooting Sports Park in El Monte California, whilst pistol and rifle events will be held in a temporary indoor range at the Long Beach Convention Centre, in LA’s iconic Long Beach area.

The ISSF is optimistic that these venues will enable shooting sport athletes to get the true Olympic experience, thanks to their proximity to both the Olympic Village and other Olympic sports venues.
